I know someone in this research area. Info can be found at...

I'd like to say that within 100 years some kind of clean(er) energy will be produced at the atomic level.
But the hurdles associated with Fusion, really do seem insurmountable at this time.

When enough research [in other words research money--which would take away from profits and that is never really likely] is done to find technology capable. Right now, it still takes more energy to generate a fusion reaction than is yielded. Overall net loss and that is never good for business. But, we can always hope. "Billionaire" or even "trillionaire" would not adequately describe the person who finds a way to make it happen. Also, probably target would be applicable since I cannot see the current energy companies being too happy about it.

France will get to host the project to build a 10bn-euro (£6.6bn) nuclear fusion reactor, in the face of strong competition from Japan.
The International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter) will be the most expensive joint scientific project after the International Space Station.
The Iter programme was held up for over 18 months as parties tried to broker a deal between the two rivals.

It already is. Sunlight is produced by fusion, and most electricity on earth is produced by sunlight, directly by photovoltaic cells, or indirectly by burning plants or fossilized plants.
Whether man can control a fusion reaction in a way that lets him economically generate electricity is an engineering question. If he works at it hard enough, probably.
