These insects like moisture mostly. They are brown and have pincher like things that seem to come out of thier mouths

What you have may be called a 'Stag Beetle' unlike earwig whose pinchers come from its thorax facing away from its head, the Stag Beetle's pinchers come from around its mouth. It is a deep red/brown color.

On one site I read that activities that disturb the soil may lead to elimination of local populations. Do you need a new lawn? Maybe you can till up your sod and re-plant or re-sod.

Another option is to introduce predators of the beetle: Magpies, Cats, Foxes, Bats, Hedgehogs, Frogs, Squirrels.

I think you mean ear wigs. We just have to live with them. They seem to be everywhere.
