You *won't* know if there's a defect in your baby until and unless it is discovered. It *might* be discovered before the baby is born, right after birth, within the first few years, in adulthood, or never. It depends on what type of defect it is, what tests are done, and what the parents or doctor notice. Ultrasounds are *not* necessarily a good method of finding problems. So many of them are done so routinely these days that they are rarely read carefully.

There are many tests that can be done. There is the non-invasive ultrasound and there is a triple screen blood test that can be done later in pregnancy. The doctor can also do an amniocentesis or choriovillus sampling. There are numerous tests that can be done! The best thing would be to talk to you OB and decide what tests, based on your risk factors, should be done.

my son was born with polycystic kidneys and this was detected at 18 weeks by a ultrasound,most abnormalities can be detected by then,of course the new 3d and 4d scans can be way more advanced than normal ultrasounds,hope that helps
