That's really a tough thing for the minor. If they are a child (under 12) then they say that the child is either being influenced, or is incapable of knowing what they want (which is not correct, but that's the agruements I've heard). If the minor is a teen, then they say the child just wants to get away from authority, and is hoping for something easier with the other parent (again, not necessarily correct).
It's never easy, but the proper age is not a matter of years, it's a matter of maturity level. Good luck!

How mature are you? My daughter was mature enough at the age of 9, although she would not live with her father. My son on the other hand wanted to live with his father at the age of 16, his father did not want him. Normally in IN it's around the age of 12. Most states differ.
