I say a rat! But if you want to be master chose dog and if you want to be servant chose cat. Both shed and both need alot of care. You have to take both to vet if they are sick and for yearly shots. A dog needs a license. Both usually live 10-18 years or more. I have a cat and though I know stuff about caring for one I don't speak Catese. I have not had a dog. I prefer ratties over other pets. Any pet whether big or small is a committment. You willing to make one?

Its a personal choice issue. I personally have both cats and dogs. I think they are both better in different areas. If you want an animal that is capable of being more independent, one that is less likely to need your constant attention, and requires few if any baths. Go for a cat. If you want an animal that is more likely to be devoted to you unyielding, one that can accompany you to the park (not that cats cant....but its problematic at best), one that just might encourage you to exercise (those daily walkies), I would go for the dog.

There is no better. Both are great friends and I love them both.
It's true cats and dogs have different personalties and different needs which I have seen in other people's answers very well explained so I don't need to explain it again.
I also would say it depends on your personality as well. What do you want from your animal friend? Then you can make a reasonable decision based on your needs and their needs - so that you will be both be well suited to each other and happy living together.

A cat is an independent animal there like woman and they don't need allot of care but there not very friendly they only think of them self's
As for a dog they love everyone but if you learn them to take a dump from the beginning you will love them as your child .

Neither is better, they are both lovely animals to have. However, a dog requires a bit more work but a cat desires a bit more freedom.

in my opinion i would get a dog because to me there are more active. i have a lab that is 100lbs. i wish he was a smaller dog though.cats hiss, bit, ect.dogs can bit but usually not that hard. if u train them when their little then they will be good when they are older. u can dress a dog up and put it in a little bag that u carry around like in "legally blonde". cats u can dress up but usually people don't. sometimes i would wish for a cat more then a dog, but i would choose a little dog like a poodle that doesn't shed and is little. i think not one or the other is better. i think they are both find. its in your opinion!

CAT
I'm not getting up all hours of the night or rushing home to walk a stupid DOG, it's like a barking child you'll have for 16- 20 years, it cries all night, you have wash it (but it still will always smell like DOG), dog hair on everything, feed it, pickup it's poop! make sure it has a baby sitter!
NO Thank you
I can flight to London for a week come back and kitty knows just what to do with out any sitter, food, water litter and they're perfectly content.

It sounds to me as if there are a lot of lazy people that have answered this question so far. Dogs are very wonderful creatures and are very special in there own way, yes they have to be taken care of and walked and bathed, but don't you have to be taken care of? Did your parents say well I will just forget about you when you pooped in your diaper, I don't think so. So I have to dogs in my home and they don't smell and they go out and do there business so get real and get a dog!!They will love you forever and never ask any questions.
