Server can be large in processing speed and storage capacity. In the planned network each server is setup for dedicated application. For example like...
FTP server->All the softwares are put in it, connecting to it over the network users can download softwares
WEB server->Companies website is hosted in it,all the users over the LAN or Internet can browse for information.
Email server->Users send and receive their emails to others through this server. It maintains all the user information, passwords and their emails..
There can be multiple physical servers serving same purpose and vice-versa.
Hope this helps.

The servers hold important information and make sure things run smoothly, without a server holding certain information your computer would have to hold more files, the servers hold the software such as the main mailbox software to make sure mail goes where it should, it contains storage for network users and also login information restricting access to the network to users who are supposed to be there.

servers are like the mother of all the workstations or host computers. its like the manager that keeps track of all the other computers in the network. it provides info, security and other stuff... actually there are many types of servers existing in a complete and working network.. if you want to know all about servers, try searching the net for networking tutorials...

Servers are bascially used to keep all the information/files/docs in centralised location and make sharing easy.
Servers are also high end computers which can handle lots of things at the same time, they can multitask easily.
