Yes. You don't want to make a cannon out of cheap plastic if you plan on firing a large projectile. The cars from the fifty's were made of strong materials like steel, now that has been changed. We now concentrate on safety and found that if the car takes most of the force, the passengers have a better chance to survive.

I can't think of the name, but the apparatus used to ignite bunsen burners is made of materials that create a spark when rubbed together.
