Hahahahahahahaha sorry, just havin a bubble at that answerer who asked 'who said YOU invented the English language'. Oh the irony, the sweet, sweet irony.
(Hmmm, it's called the English language, English, now, where in the world would English come from???)
(And, I think you'll find that the Americans only came to the aid of blighty because the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour, thanks for the help and all that, but you could have joined in earlier).

As a matter of fact the actual meal names are
Breakfast 9am
Elevenses 11am
Luncheon 1pm
High Tea 4pm
Supper 7pm
This was the true English meal programme and should be adhered to at all times. The term "dinner" was made up by commoners and meant a meal of any sort. Presumably as commoners have no structure so therefore eat whenever it suits.
Oh for the good old days of the empire where we had 5 meals a day. All 5 meals were of adequate size and not too big so thats why had 5 a day. Each meal had to include one portion of fruit or veg by law. Thats why we have the 5 a day brigade.
Some commoners called thier evening meal Tea as this was short for High Tea and the often had a cup of tea with this meal.

We aren't given enough time off from work to eat the main meal in the middle of the day. My grandmother used to call the midday meal dinner, but she lived in a rural area where farmers were able to leave the fields and eat a big meal. I would get fired if I did that, and even if I could I would prefer to wait to eat with my other family members in the evening. I wish we had enough time to have dinner at noon the way I did at my grandmother's.

Hi, I don't mean to poop on your little rant, but I'm from the midlands and call the midday thing dinner and the evening thing tea, however, if I was from somewhere else, I think it's southerners that do it, they would say noon thing is lunch and evening thing is dinner.
My French teacher had a little rant about this because diner is tea in French, which would be easy to remember if we called tea dinner.

It's not just the Americans. Over here, in different parts of the country it varies too.
Here in the South, dinner is whenever you eat your main meal of the day. Lunch is a snack you eat midday if it's not your main meal and tea is a snack you eat around 5 p.m. if you have eaten your main meal at midday.

We fought for the freedom from ENGLAND to be AMERICANS so when we changed our words for things it was done on purpose to show that we have freedom and do not have to use the same words for things. So why do you not comform to our way of thinking here in the USA? who said u were right about what things are called? I think why words changed is because we have such a diversity of people that we adopted words from the masses and a lot of our words have German and other languages mixed in.
So let us be the way we want to be and u be the way u want to be! "live and let live"!

You Brit's haven't learned anything! We did not listen last time you told us to conform! Conform is a bad word here you would get just as far telling us to sit down and be quite.
