I am reffering to the old lady who got jailed for not paying her poll tax, sure not paying is against the law! But are the local councils breaking the law, why hasen't the monopoplies commision stepped in on local services? If you went to tescos and bought 6 eggs, got home and saw thewre was only 3, you would complain right? So why is it , we, who pay these charges have the right to withold monies because the services we are paying for are not being met.

I know you mean council tax, anyhow the lady in question was wrong not to pay her bill. I agree that carting someone off to jail for a minor offence is abominable when paedophiles are being set free.If only more people complained in this country, look at France, they have a riot every time the government there cocks up!It's time we stopped adopting the "stiff upper lip" attitude and started to show the politicians who their bosses are, us the taxpayer!

yes you complain but you dont refuse to pay for the eggs as that is shoplifting.

Public services are a monopoly for the simple reason that the private sector and the free market wouldnt provide these services as their is no financial incentive for them to do so. For example, the delivery of benefits, why would private companies compete against each other to pay people money, whats in it for them?

Just look at the state of the industries that have been privatised, the former British steel is on its last legs, railtrack had to be bought out by the government and the fuel industry is in a right state.

Yes public services sometimes screw things up a bit but refusing to pay isnt the soloution.

The council tax is a lot fairer than the poll tax..... At the end of the day you have a voice, you can use it every 4 years to replace a council if you think they are charging you unfairly. The problem is that people don't bother to vote but ***** about their government. Write to complain if you don't like the service, then vote for somebody else, and if that doesn't work move to somewhere else....

the lady has a good point. did they do anything about the mess no. they stuck her in jail.what every one in this country should do is make your point and dont pay, they cant put us all in jail.the poll tax is bleeding people dry and what do the councils do for us, nothing.we have lived at our house 3 yrs and have never seen and street cleaner , we have pot holes in the road.and for the last 2 yrs we have had lads and girls hanging about our corner and 3 or 4 cars each night coming and going. me and my neighbours have complained to police council and asbo people what have they done nothing .the police came the other night moved them when we tried to talk to them they said they could not stop they had to go to a pub fight. yet we have to put up with these till all hours of they day and night. this country has gone to the dogs.

"Government" stinks because the citizens allow it to. Citizens become complacent, and often dependent upon "Government" to protect them. "Government by the people, for the people, and of the people" has become a myth, taught in American History classes throughout the 50 states. Nothing will change until the "citizens" acknowledge their dependency upon "government" and empower themselves to overcome this dependency.
