That very feeling is a big reason I do not actively follow news (I pick up tidbits via Yahoo! headlines and click links that look interesting, but don't actively sit down to watch news or read papers or anything).
But now I would like to share a trio of excerpts from a play by my friend Gnimbley the Gnome, which keep me going most days - I'm pretty sure I have his permission to share since I'm not charging you to read this answer:
"The thing is, these people know it's their fault. They know that they could have done more, many times. I'm sure they often think that. They could have done more. But I'm sure that they think that whatever they might have done, it wouldn't have made a difference. It's hard to see the difference. It's so small. Things get washed out by the chaotic nature of life, and consequences can be so elusive. They have had many opportunities to make the world better, and they let them pass."
[...]
"Most of the times you make a difference are not when you stop yourself from doing someone wrong. The true opportunities are when you open someone's eyes. When you don't keep your mouth shut and look away. When you help others see they might be wrong."
[...]
"Tonight or tomorrow or the next day, one of these people might recognize an opportunity and not let it pass this time. They might stand up for something. They might open their mouth and say 'no' or 'stop' or 'please' or 'thank you'. That's how you make a difference."

Yes, I certainly did feel that bad, and it turned out to be clinical depression. The good news is that clinical depression is a chemical phenomenon and can be handled pretty well with medication, though talk therapy can help, too. While mental problems in the past have carried some stigma, these modern times have freed us from much of that. What caused it? Heredity can be a factor, and so can circumstances(which can have a long term effect on brain chemistry if you have suffered ongoing trauma or even a short term trauma of great impact.
If people need help with this, it's available!!

Yes, I have felt so bad that I was almost crippled. I was depressed. I stopped taking care of myself and then stopped taking care of my family and house. That made me feel worse so I did even less. I was depressed.
The most important thing you can do is call your doctor. Tell them you are depressed to the point of not being able to function. The doctor can prescribe any of several great antidepressants and within a week you'll find your old self.
Depression isn't caused by life events...it is a chemical imbalance in your body that is easily treated and controlled by medications..no different that if you had high blood pressure.
I was so worried what people would think.
Everyone I knew was so proud that I did something to treat my disease.
Call your doctor today...you are missing so much life and so many people are missing you. Peace.

Sounds like you are going through a rough spot. I have been there.... It will pass but you need to talk about whatever it is to start to deal with it in order to feel better. If it still continues you need to seek professional help because you may be depressed depending on the reason for feeling so bad.... Things will get better and you will grow from each set back in your life. You learn to make better decisions and live your life in a better light. keep your head up and you will see.

yes that is called depression, what caused it I don't know a combination of things goes wrong, one thing then another then another, and all of a sudden it feels like the weight of the world is on your shoulders, and you are getting crushed. The best way to get rid of these feelings of depression is to talk to someone about them. Talk to anyone, parent, sibling, teacher, counselor, etc... If you would feel better talking to a stranger you can talk to me. I have been depressed for long period of times over the course of my life so when I talk I know what I am talking about.

yes. It started the morning of March 26,2004 and it lasted for about a year. I still have days like that but they are farther apart now. When I wake up every morning I say to myself.Life is for the living! Let the dead rest in peace

Felt like that today. It's a combination for me. Lack of motivation, bored by work....fortunately it is only a phase and it will pass. It could also be a sign that you have been overdoing things and it's time to slow down or come to a halt for a while.

I have known many people who have. But there is never a time that we cant do something about feeling this way. Because you can always change your mind. Change the way you think or see things. Change your attitude, your life. It is never impossible. All you have to do is make up your mind, and then do it.
