Farringdon is very much up and coming. I think it is a great area: it is also known as Little Italy due to the number of Italians there, so there are excellent delis. Exmouth Market has various bars and a mixture of shops from DIY to bijou designer. Leather Lane Market is also nearby where you can pick up clothes, vegs and various snacks. There are also Tescos and Sainsburys close to the area. There are also a lot of cool, trendy types buying in the area as well as lower income so there is a mix of society. Travel-wise the area is well served by tube, with Kings X, and Thameslink (as it was) all within walking reach. There's loads of good pubs and you can also walk to the river in around 10 mins.

When I went to NYC, the Villages reminded me of Farringdon!

Other places to consider are Battersea, Balham, Streatham, Ealing, Barnet, Camden. If you want to rate them the upmystreet site is full of info

The main driver in London is price - if you can afford Islington/ Kensington then fine - but it's probably no exaggeration to say that all areas of London that are affordable to the ordinary citizen have some problems. That said, the South West of the city has some (comparatively) reasonably priced decent areas such as Balham, Clapham, Earlsfield, Southfields, but what you gain in decent accommodation you lose with the hapless transport connections....no tube for most of the areas and you're forced onto packed commuter overland trains....

You can tell a lot about a neighborhood by it test scores. You can also get a neighborhood demographic from this CPS site. The Clear Map will give you crime statistics but it's kind of complicated to navigate. If you want a great neighborhood to live in you will need to go right outside the city limits to oak park Illinois. It only a 20-30 min ride by train or 10-15 by car to downtown Chicago.

Islington is fine and very progressed.
Its progession seems to be moving down upper street and progressing Highbury and towards Stoke Newington.
Farringdon is complete central city living.

Farringdon is home to a private club called the Scottish Malt Whisky Society, tucked away in a side street. delightfully tranquil, a charming little haven to get quietly wankered on overpriced Malt before falling asleep and pissing myself on the tube back to Harrow.....yup, I'd go with Farringdon.
