As I see it, there is more than the odd chance that Asteroid 2004 XP14 will cause the Moon to wobble (hitting it is impossible, because it will be over 35% off from the path of closest Earth proximity and at a different angle or attitude), and that this wobble could easily have unforseen effect on everything from tidal waves (creating gigantic waves!!!) to trigerring unusual movement deep inside our planet's core and thus affecting the movement of its tectonic plates, which could therefor cause the generation of major seismic activity, even bordering on the cataclysmic (e.g. Setting off the San Andreas Fault, which is currently overdue for a major "spring-back-like" release of energy (something akin to when a grasshopper or flea winds up its super-elastic hind-leg muscles and jumps fast, high and far !!!). I predict that within two days of its passing by, even within hours, it will have been the primary source cause of major earthquakes worldwide, especially setting of The San Andreas!

Explain how a 600 yard wide rock could cause the 2,160 mile wide Moon to wobble, without touching it? It'd be like throwing a golf ball at a bus and expecting it to tip it over....

It doesn't matter what the moon does as far as wobbling and spinning, it's gravity isnt affected (unless it breaks up) and therefore the end result means zip to us. We may just get to see the far side!

I googled "Asteroid 2004 XP14" can not find any mention of it making the Moon wobble. It is too small to have any measurable effect anyway. Far from predicting disaster, I predict that it's passage will have no measurable effect on the Moon or Earth. On July 5 (2 days after the closest approach) we will all see which prediction is correct.

The asteroid could cause huge tsunamis (tidal waves) and earthquakes only if it struck the earth. It might cause the moon to wobble if it struck the moon. It isn't supposed to strike either the earth or the moon according to calculated trajectories.

I never heard that before, but it is an interesting theory. Last night's asteroid pass made me think of Deep Impact, a disaster movie in which a meteor hit the ocean and caused a mega tsunami. It made me think of other things that could cause a tsunami. I guess I will have to add yours to my list!
