Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird, it's like a 7 minute jamming session. Air guitar heaven.

Led Zep are up there too.

Some classy answers here - I particularly like the Stevie Ray mention, but would quibble with Albatross on the grounds that it's an instrumental and doesn't have a 'solo' as such - if you're going with full song instrumentals, then you have to hear Arlen Roth's take on 'When A Man Loves A Woman' which has every trick in the book and a few that haven't yet been written (despite the cut being about 20 years old) - the album is Hot Pickups and the rest of it is dross... and November Rain is so overblown and rubbish as a song that it cannot qualify for 'best' anything... my favourite solos tend to be the ones that sneak in and out, and are awesomely simple - Mike Campbell on Tom Petty's American Girl: Mick Ralphs on Bad Company's 'Can't Get Enough' and just about anything Peter Tosh cut with the Wailers are good examples of the sort of stuff I like.... there is even one U2 song - bizarrely I can't remember which one (I think it's 'Sweetest Thing')??? which has a lead break approximately 8 notes long.... but each and every one of those notes is pure perfection...

Sorry to disagree but Brian May's Brighton Rock at Wembley is the best solo guitar ever!!
It's 12 or so minutes of pure delight.
The twists and turns, the echoes... like a battle against himself!
He's the man!!

I used to do "numb" in the last cover band i was in, and the solo is pretty cool and fun to play. My favorite was actually Gary Moore's "Still got the Blues" though, which is probably the only solo that i never messed around with as far as trying to add my own bits , i just played that one note-for-note.

I like the guitar solo in "Heart of Stone" by the Rolling Stones. It's just mellow and chill.

For something different - Raul Midon's "State Of Mind" was pretty amazing on Jools Holland the other night. "The Pump" by Larry Carlton and Steve Lukather is well worth a listen and more inventive than the standard "Clappo" answers.

Pretty much anything Eddie Van Halen does. Oh, and Lynnard Skynnard's "Free Bird." That is THE best song-exit jam of all time, in my humble opinion.

Honorable mention: Santana on "Europa."

I have to agree with your choice since none others come to mind. I try and think of a song and I can't remember exactly how the solo goes, but I can remember this one.
