I think you can get zinc sulphide by reacting zinc with sulphur straightaway (though I can't say the exact conditions required) . Or you could add ammonium sulphide to zinc hydroxide solution and and get zinc sulphide precipitated out.

Or else, it can also be precipitated by hydrogen sulphide, from an alkaline or neutral solution of a zinc salt - in which case zinc chloride can be used.
The reaction would be:

Zn2+ (aq) + S2- (aq) -------> ZnS (s)

the easiest way to prepare ZnS would be to react Zn metal avaible as small mettalic strips with hydrogen sulphide which can be obtained from Gibbs apparatus , an equipment present in any chemistry lab.H2S really stinks ( rotten egg smell),so take care not to faint wbile preparing ZnS which can be collected as a ppt.
Rt - Zn + H2S ----) Zn S + H2 (gas)

Commercialy it is made by reducing ZnSO4 with carbon. in lab you may do the same by passing H2S through Zn(OH)2.
