Depends on how you define crime.
I think prostitution should be legal. If it were legal, the state could collect taxes and require the registered prostitutes to take health checks and those taxes could pay for it. It'd make the world a safer place. So long as there's a demand, there will be a supply and keeping it illegal won't change the fact that there's a demand for sex.
The conservative religious right thinks it would lead to the moral corruption of young women which, as can be seen in western countries where it is legal, is simply wrong.
I bet my shorts that rape would decrease quite a bit if sex were available legally... but hey ho.. let's just continue to let the police waste their time and resources to lock up hookers and release them the next day to continue business as usual.

Prostitution is illegal because it is detrimental to public health,. public safety and family relationships, especially to the marriage committment, which is already in serious trouble in most places.

In reality, prostitution VICTIMIZES everyone who participates in it because it endangers females and males, robs both genders of their finances, wastes the energy of both genders on meaningless sexual encounters, spreads STD's and undermines sexual desires for husbands and wives in a marriage relationship.
