Give me the pros and cons, or if you feel Megatron was best suited..

Also, if Starscream wanted leadership of the Decepticons so bad; why didn't he break Megatron in half when he would shoot him in gun form?

Hmm...Megatron had the stature to be leader, while Starscream, to be fair, had a certain amount of personal insecurity which led him to screaming and bitterness if and when he didn't get his way. He always thought he knew best, which is great if you always do, but in a leader who got things wrong so often, quickly begins to look like hubris. I doubt very much that he'd have survived very long if given complete control of the Decepticons.

So who else is there? Soundwave is a distinct possibility, as he had perhaps the most impressive arsenal of ways to manipulate behaviours - brain scanning, electrical jamming etc etc. But the problem with him as leadership material is that he was always just that bit too enigmatic, and of course, he showed little loyalty to his fellow Decepticons, so they tended to mistrust and even despise him.

Megatron/Galvatron - Not all that bad, as leaders go. When he was outwitted, it tended to be because of things he simply hadn't thought of, which is perhaps almost as much as can be hoped for. So he's a strong contender for Decepticon leader, and fairly safe in his throne.

The only one I think might have been able to successfully oust him and go on to crush the Autobots is Shockwave - the stay-at-home commander of military operations, who helped maintain Decepticon control of Cybertron for a gazillion years and re-established the link so the power crisis at home could be abated by using Earth resources.

Sadly, I undersand he's now been crushed and torn to shreds, but otherwise his more logical approach to things than most of the other Decepticons might well have made him an effective leader.

Honestly, I don't think Starscream would have been able to control his emotions well enough to be leader of the Decepticons. I also don't think Megatron was the best leader he could have been due to his obsession with defeating Optimus Prime, & with his willingness to pull his troops from battle as easily as he did. Granted, this was necessary to perpetuate 30-minute episodes of an '80s cartoon that was still clinging to the men-in-white-hats line of thought that the good guys would always win in the end. Still, I think of the characters I saw, I would have liked to see what would have happened had Soundwave been given the chance to lead for a while. Soundwave reminds me of Spock in some ways. He seemed the least driven by emotion, & struck me as intelligent. I do think Soundwave was more of a follower than a leader, but I wonder if he would have met the challenge if allowed to lead.

Depends on which version of Starscream. The current series, I think Starscream would make a good leader overall. Better thent he current megatron. Still I do think Galvatron fromt he Movie was the best lead of the decepticons over all.

I don't think he would be other than the fact that he had a spark that could not be destroyed. He seemed to me to be the Cobra Commander of the Decepticons whereas, Megatron was the Serpentor.

Starscream just seemed to be able to think the ideas up but for the life of him, could not get it done

Noo starscream was too much of a pansy and would run away before he could get anything going against the autobots... they Megatron always had a plan.. and at one time he could turn into a gun he was cool.. until the parents of young kids complained !!!!!!!

No. Mainly because he was out of control most of the time and did not possess enough leadership qualities. He did not seem to inspire confidence nor did he think of anything more than power.
