It is to help with the offside calls.
As noted by at least one, usually a lot of fields use different designs for purely aesthetic reasons, including circles, diamonds, etc. As you've noticed, there has been a marked lack of variety in the field designs for the World Cup. Only the striped patterns are used.

The stripes are caused by the roller on the lawn mower. It rolls the blades of grass over one way when mowing in a direction then rolls the grass blades over the other way when mowing in the opposite direction causing a stripped affect.

Have you ever mowed a lawn? when the mower goes over the grass in one direction, the grass leans one way and reflects a different shade of green than when you go over it the other way. It helps call offsides too.

It is done for purely aesthetics reasons, some are done in stright lines other in concentric circles, and is definitely not natural, UNLESS it's those crop circle people back again !!! :-0
