The Romans left around 400 AD, and that left dozens of warring "kingdoms" all over England. They were supposedly united under Arthur (he may have been just a war leader), and the Saxons took over, including such Saxon kings as Harold Harefoot, and other unusual names. The current batch of kings and queens started with William the Conqueror (aka, William the Bastard), who killed the last Saxon king in 1066.

Royalty, per se, has existed since the dawn of time. Britain has been populated by many different groups, Celt, Anglo, Roman, Saxon, Danish, Viking, Pict, etc. Each of these groups had a leader (chief, prince, king, they went by different names). Over time the kingdoms were absorbed by the Kingdom of Wessex under Alfred the Great. We could call him the first king of England, though he would not have called it as such.
In 1066, William the conqueror seized the throne. He instituted the form of Royalty that we are familiar with today.
Hope this helps!
