I will be going to Czech republic very soon for a study programme for which it is necessary to learn local language.I have learnt german and im wondering if that will make it easier for me to learn the czech language..are they similar?

Czech is a complicated language with a whole bunch of grammar stuff you have to learn and a difficult pronounciation. Czech and German are not similar at all, but having learned one foreign language already will probably help you a bit though. You will understand the grammar better even though those two languages are so different. Don't expect the German vocabulary to be useful while learning Czech though.

It has a different base than german but if you already speak two languages learning a third is much easyer no matter what the base of the third language
