It is general view worldwide that Americans are ignorant. Americans, do u think there is some truth in that?

I agree that its not all people, but in my opinion yes some Americans are ignorant, and more prevalent than anywhere else in the world. I think the reason is also the media, remembereing that alot of media coverage come froms and surround the USA. And for the guy bringing the leadership thing up, well does the same percentage of people who voted for your current president still believe that their vote was correct! And might I add that a view of country is also drawn from its politcal influences around the world, and your president is more often than not in the bulls-eye of the media!

I think we are probably the LOUDEST country when it comes to voicing our opinions (and it's usually not the most intelligent doing so). Our loudest voices are usually in government and I must say that it isn't common sense that wins elections in this country. Our most powerful people have the loudest voices, and the most powerful people tend to be the most ignorant, so yes there is some truth in that.

Certainly. The reason for this does not lie in biological or ethnical origins but in cultural. The US is a consumer society. This shapes the general attitude and thus also the knowledge of people. If it does not involve material things people show lack of interest in it. There is no reason to have a what Dutch people call "general knowledge" of the world. Even when the Americans travel, they pass through all landmarks without bothering to get to know the countries. They go to the Eiffel Tower, to the Piramides, take pictures for back home and thats it. They never try to grasp the meaning of the situations, places and people they are confronted with. So combine a lack of understanding of contents with the obvious lack of factual knowledge you arive to the stupied american the world is so familiar with.

What most people know is what is represented in the media and that is mostly associated with actions of our government. I think it's safe to say there are many countries where the government doesn't always represent the views of the average citizen. China would be a good example of that. At least we have the ability to change our leadership when the differences affect the majority of citizens.

The main ignorance lies in what people from various countries really know about each other.

I can't speak for all Americans, but some Americans are ignorant of other cultures. Some think that everyone in the world should be acting like them or adhere to the same beliefs and customs as they do. I say the cure for ignorance is experience. Experience other cultures and learn from them. You might learn something about yourself and others around you....

Yes, I think that alot of Americans are ignorant, but so are alot of other people around the world living in other countries. I don't think it's a matter of where you live, but a matter of who you are.

I am a musician who travels around the world and I can say without hesitation. Yes, yes, it is embarrassingly true. Ask one of us "Where is Bulgaria"? Duh is that in Idaho. Yeah man, that's one of the reasons for the anti-American sentiment in the world today. I am truly ashamed.
