American Legions across the nation have been honoring Flag Day since President Harry Truman signed legislation in 1949 marking June 14 as the annual observance. When conducting the ceremony, American Legion members follow the organization's flag code, which recommends they burn flags after they have served their purpose

Flag Code:
Section 8k of the Flag Code states, "The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning."

A proper disposal of the American flag is to ceremonially burn it. It is the symbol of our country and everything we stand for, our freedom and how we got the freedom. With pride, it should be burned only if tattered and worn. Or the other way to dispose of the flag is to bury it as you would a person or animal. The flag is not just a piece of a cloth, it is a very significant symbol that every American should take pride in. They are trying to ammend the constitution to prevent the people making statements or burning for "fun" from doing it. It is a serious matter when people do it out of anger or negligence.

Yes, you are supposed to burn a flag when it is too old and frayed. You are NEVER supposed to throw it in the trash. Remember you are not burning the flag in protest or to dishonor the U.S.
"No, you can't throw those little flags away. The only "respectable" way to dispose of a worn or soiled flag is to give it a ceremonial and dignified retirement, preferably by burning it. Ironically, the American Legion and Boy Scouts burn thousands of flags every year in respectful retirement ceremonies. The only difference between their actions, and the actions of a long-haired hippie protestor are the thoughts in the minds of the two."

I had to read your question like four times to understand what you were asking, but I finally got it.

Yeah, I think I have heard that's it legal to burn an old flag as a way to "retire it", if you will. But I don't know how you can go about that. Maybe the yellow pages have a flag burning listing..? Or if you know someone in the military, they might be able to tell you.

Yes, when an American flag is worn out, it is to either be burned or buried. There are companies that can do it for you, usually by volunteers. The rule is that it must be done with honor and respect for the flag though, and not as a sign of disrespect.

I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma. On Memorial Day, you can take your worn out flags to any funeral home or fire station. Then on Flag Day, the American Legion has a burning ceremony at a local crematorium.
To date, I think that it is still legal for anyone to burn a flag. They haven't been able to change our Constitution yet. Peace.

Some Americans do burn their flag when they are worn out. It is the "proper" way to "retire" an American Flag.

Do a search for "flag retirement" and you'll find a lot of resources on how to perform a ceremony, or a lot of places you can send your flag to have it retired properly.

Anyone can burn a flag; it's the only proper way to dispose of one. What makes people mad is when someone burns a flag just to make a point.

Yes you can burn the flag if it is worn or torn, BUT you must cut out each start and cut out each strip. Then put the red strips down first, then the white strips the blue background and then the stars on the top. This is a respect issuse. You MUST do it in this order for it to be done the right way.

To burn our Flag is an honor and right. It should be done in private with respect. To burn it in protest is wrong and should be against the law. I am an American,I love my country and I know I have rights but wrong is wrong " Mr. President" please protect MY FLAG.
