I love to read on the toilet, especially gossip magazines for some reason, which after leaving the throne I could care less about; indeed, most men seem to enjoy this. However, I've never met a woman who does! Why mkight this be, and what is the scientific reason for heightened pleasure in lightweight reading while having a Richard the Third?

Even if there were a TV in the toilet (or bathroom for you Yanks), I wouldn't watch it - it has to be reading!

Hmm, it seems women DO read on the the toilet, yet perhaps find it hard to admit face-to-face... My favourites are Heat and Closer magazine, closely followed by Viz.

I think the reason boys read gossip mags on the loo is cos no one can see them, so they don't have to be embarassed at reading heat!
I always read when I'm having a 'Richard the Third' but never when I wee.
My boyfriend on the other hand never reads, he just sits there trying to force it.
I reckon its because you need to relax when having a number two, or else its difficult to do. Plus its boring if you don't read.
My boyfriend always trys to force it and has to go back and forth to the loo cos it never happens. This is why I read, cos when I'm relaxed and taking my time, its easy! haha. God, I'm so gross.

Hey, guess what? I'm a woman and I always read in the loo. Usually VIZ or something equally giggleworthy
The reason is probably that you're a captive audience and there' not much else you can do
Except if you're really gross and think it's OK to phone somebody...

A scientific reason, huh? I'll take a stab at that for you.
Let's start with the hard sciences -- neurobiology, endocrinology, neurochemisty and all that jazz.
From a scientific position, women should be the potty readers esp. if we polorize the differences between men and woman for agrument sake (men with lots of testosterone vs. women with very little, or none due to being born with no ovaries.)
Women have more connective tissue between the hemispheres of their brains (25% larger corpus callosum, that is), and 15% more blood flow to their brains then men. In general, women can push more details from one side of their brain to the other and keep them handy in the memory. The male brain does language in the left hemisphere, but the female brain uses 6-7 cortical areas in both hemispheres. That's why so many of us talk so much. That's a neurobiological reason why women would actually be more physically likely to read on the potty.
The differences start in the womb around the 6th month when a normal boy's brain is bathed in testosterone, and the female brain is bathed in estrogen. The surges come around again at puberty.
Most of the kids in special education with reading problems are boys. Most of the kids that lag behind in reading development are boys. Girls have a natural advantage in languages. Boys have a natural advantage in spatial and mechanical strategies in the brain. Originally hunting and buildig skills, they show themselves in mechanical design, abstraction, meaurement, moving/changing objects.
Women are also better geared to sitting calmly for longer periods of time bonding with others verbally because they have higher levels of serotonin (calming) and oxytocin (bonding). Reading can have a similar effect on them. Having less of these chemicals in their bloodsteams makes men more impulsive and moves them into the fight - or - flight mode more easily. Another hard science reason, based on endocrinoloy, for men to get off the potty faster.
So what could be overriding a man's tendency to "do the job" and keep moving? Well, lets wander into the realm of the soft sciences (psychology, sociology, etc.). Respect is important to men. How many men do you suppose feel like they are in a powerful position (hunting or building tendancies) when they are poohing? Do you really want to consentrate on that? Men have a harder time (disadvantage compared to women) multi-tasking. The upside of this is their ability to focus and not give in to distractions as much. A normal woman's hearing is about 15% higher than a man's (she's probably not as into that roar of your Harley's engine because it hurts her ears, but she'll probably hear the baby crying . . . ), her eyes and brain record more details in the surroundings, and her skin is 10 times as sensitive to touch/pain as a man's.
Could it be that a man is less distracted by noise and decorating when in the toilet/bathroom, and better able to concentrate (focus) once he decides to read than a woman is? Yes. Is it also possible that reading makes him feel like he is doing something useful instead of just something weak? Yes. Do men eat more of certain foods than women and get constipated more . . . well, I have no idea. I think reading is an escape thing for men, esp., in the restroom. That's why you couldn't care less about remembering what you read in there.
When does your testosterone and vassopressin show itself again? When you get up and look at what you have produced. Men are much more impressed by the size of what they have produced . . . so I've heard. A guy I know told me there is a website that is something like poo.com or pooh.com, where people (probably guys) compare their logs.
I hope you vote for my answer; I put a lot of work into this for you. Hope you enjoy it. ;)

I like to read because the inside of a bathroom is sort of a boring place. There's an added benefit though, because I'm not trying to rush what I'm doing down south, it generally requires less wiping.

They only do this to avoid the jobs around the house that they SHOULD be doing instead, or to get away from everyone else.
Personally I find it much more comfortable to read whilst sitting on the sofa, or whilst doing something else (such as cooking the dinner).

i guess its only my great-grand father that can give you the real answer to that question becos its something that has been handed down from long past generations from the time TV has been invented any main toilet scene has a MAN reading on the bowl and you don't read for knowledge or excitement then its actually just a tradition, its like a male-chauvinistic culture

If I could watch a sports show whilst on the throne, I'd forget about reading, but as that's not possible, reading has to suffice.

I don't like to read on the loo, it seems unhygienic. I just think about stuff I haven't time to think about otherwise.... philosophical stuff... or how defecating isn't the most efficient way of disposing of waste!
Pity we can't just change our batteries like computers.

I don't. If you were to see me on the loo (what a lovely idea) you are likely to see a solitary tear roll down my face as I clutch my latest mag or novel... It's an addiction I tell you :(
