If your internet is still working (I'm sure that's how you got the virus) then go into "My Comupter" on your PC, then select "Control Panel", then select "Network Connections", then check whether the little icons that come up say "Firewall enabled" or not. If not, then there should be an option on the left to "enable firewall" - do so! Then launch Internet Explorer and use Yahoo! Search to find "AVG Free anti-virus" and download it do your PC (it's free). As soon as it's downloaded, disconnect your PC from the internet, (pull the actual cable out of your PC) then run the AVG program to search for viruses, and it will then let you delete them. Then you can reconnect to the internet and my advice is to then go to mozilla.com and download the Mozilla internet browser and use that instead of Internet Explorer in future, as it is easier to block pages and software you don't want (you can specify exact settings in the "Internet Options" part of the menu), and it's just way more convenient in general.

Poor Mum. These viruses tend to only last a couple of days. Pack her off to bed with a hot drink and couple of magazines, Heat and the such seem very populer these days. In my day it was the Radio Times or nothing! Anyway she'll be right as rain before you know it. I think it would be a bit drastic to get rid of her...well if she's still got it next week keep that as a plan B. Good luck

I would advise getting hold of some antivirus software such as Norton and McAffee and installing it. This software will find the virus and get rid of it I think.
The other alternative is to take it to a computer repair shop or a friend who knows what they are doing with computers, actually thats what I'd do!
Good luck!
PS Wonderful, unless the person repairing your computer has a degree in Engineering they are technicians NOT engineers. STOP calling all and sundry Engineers, please!

firstly you have to find out if she has a virus or spyware as people sometimes class any infection on a computer as a virus
firstly you should go to http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx,and run the dedicated malicous removal tool, which will scan and remove the worst offending viruses, such a mydoom, and win32 variants.
next you should go to http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html#3,and download the free anti-virus edition,it includes 7 real time scanners and a great clear up rate
it also has some great downloadable skins to put a bit of fun into virus scanning
just remember to register(free)within 60 days,as it will run as a demo until then, but wont make a difference to the ruuning of the software
next you should go to http://www.safer-networking.org/,and download and install spy-bot,the best spyware removal and preventetive tool on the market
its free to download and has regular updates
what makes this different to other spyware programs is the imunize feature, which like the word means ,it imiunizes your computer against all known spyware, thus making it safer to use the net
use adaware personal aswell avalible from http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/,this program works in tandem with spybot ,but this works at adware where spybot works at spyware
if your mum downloads and installs all these programs,it should
1.clean her computer of viruses and spyware
2.imunize the system for added protection
3.keep her p.c safe from any future attacks as long as she keeps them all up-to-date,this is so important as new defenitions(virus code that the program uses to identify various viruses)come out each day and its normally the newer ones that you get hit by
if she takes my recommendations ,it should only take around a hour to install and run all 3 programs, their pretty easy to use ,so it will save you alot of money,as a p.c world technician would charge around £100 for the removal of any virus,or spyware
if you have any problem ,please email me and let me know whats wrong
good luck

First, get a reliable virus scanner, for example McAfee. Then, a Firewall, for example Zone Alarm (Free, Zone Labs). Run both, see what they find. Ensure your Operating System is fully up to date, use windows update. Get Windows Defender (Free, Microsoft)
That is assuming that you really mean your mums' PC has a virus....not 'my mums' got a computer virus'

get an anti-virus for her computer. as soon as it is loaded in do a scan for viruses. i use EZTrust Anti-virus and it is wonderful. I also recommend McAfee. Norton has crashed all the computers that we own (that's a total of 5 computers in our house - i know thats a lot). as soon as it's loaded in scan her harddrive, let it sit as long as it needs too. it can take a while. that should be able to help you out...at least at the start.

You can safely download and install all of these programs, they are the best free anti malware (malicious software) tool available.
You may need to turn off System Restore and run your pc in Safe Mode to completely clear it out, I've just posted how to to do that so if you don't get rid of it the usual way search for 'Casclient' on this site and follow the instructions in my answer.
The Windows firewall doesn't stop malware on your pc from dialling out. Either of these firewalls are free for personal use and stop unwanted incoming and outgoing traffic. You choose which programs are allowed to access the internet. They are both fairly easy to use and updated regularly.

http://www.mozilla.com/ Firefox web browser
http://www.opera.com/ Opera web browser
Instal both these web browsers, turn off javascript on one and use that browser for vising unknown websites. They don't support Active X so thats one less way for problems to get on your pc.
Winpatrol is a handy utility that tracks cookies on your pc and stops unwanted changes to your startup folder.

Spywareblaster works with Internet Explorer. It won't uninstall spyware that is already on your pc, but it will prevent hijacks and other malicious changes to

Spybot Search and Destroy anti spyware

Microsoft have two free online scanners that look for malware.
http://safety.live.com/site/en-US/default.htm
http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/default.mspx
You can also download Microsofts free Windows Defender from the official Microsoft site, and the Malicious Software Removal Tool.
Remember to update and run all of you anti malware programs at least once a week.
Viruses just can't get on to your pc in the first place if you're careful, so son't open attatchments in e-mails until you've e-mailed the sender and asked them if they meant to send you an attatchment. Scan everything before you open it by right clicking on the file and scanning with your security software.
And be cautious about what websites you visit; if you don't know the site don't visit it with Internet Explorer.
