No. He's not American at all!

I didn't think he was an African American, just an African. So no, he isn't the greatest evert African American of all time!

Only an American would make that mistake, African people come from Africa NOT America!

Is Nelson Mandela even American? If you're talking African American, then I would say Martin Luther King, although it wasn't just King who carried out boycotts and stuff, so you can't give him all the credit.

No, since he isn't American, he is African. In particular, South African.

The question might be more properly phrased "Is Neslon Mandela the greatest black civil rights leader of all time."?

As you know, Nelson is a South African.
He was a symbol who shot to fame on the back of popular PR and De Klerk should not have been made to share the Nobel Peace prize with him.
De Klerk is the real hero. His struggles, and his success, to end apartheid, without Mandela's help, deserve better recognition from the world at large.

Dear Dumb American. I have a feeling you asked this question to trigger some outrage, right?

I'll swallow the bait. There is life beyond North America. I know it's hard to believe, but MOST people on this earth don't live there, and don't want to live there. The place they live is called non-America. America has 250 million, non-America has 3 billion. Only 1 in 12 people live in America. Nelson Mandela is one of those 11 who live in non-America.

Yes, he is a great and brave man.

i don't really get you, are you asking obviously stupid questions for a joke or are they some kind of lessons to the people who actually think like your questions, because i don't think your that dumb(although that could just be me trying to see the best in you). but anyway reading some of these answers might make some people think, so its probably good either way.

No - he is South African - I was there - and at that time 1964 he was regarded as a terrorist - owing to the apartheid regime in place at the time. and was then imprisoned at Robin Island with other political prisoners.

I would say greatest African American would be Martin Luther King.:o)

Lets change the question to greatest African of all time.

Mandela was a pawn and his wife is as cruel as the white power they helped bring down.

Shaka Zulu was the greatest Black African of all time.
