Thats a good question, I've often wondered about that myself. With the amount of money they spent on bringing their Civic's "performance" on par with a Corvette, they could actually have brought a Corvette in the first place. Morons.......like the idiot who put not one, not two, but THREE huge wings on his Civic hatchback and then wondered why the steering went limp. Its called Downforce, retard, look into it..........

I'm no Civic fan, nor am I trying to defend those kind of racers, but I believe that the reason they buy non performarnace cars and then modify them is the sense of pride and completion that they get after finishing their project.
We all love our cars. Heck, some of us even consider them our babies. Think about this, if you bought a small bungalow with nothing in it. And through the years you've made it into a two-storey house with an attic, full of furnitures and all your appliances. It would have been priced the same as if you've bought a fully furnished two story house before. But if given the chance and someone trades in his newer house with the same features, would you go for it? I won't. Because the feeling of pride that I have built this house from ground up is great. Same goes for cars.
Imagine this. When you roll up the street with a Corvette, yes, people will admire your vehicle. But if they ask you, what is your engine's displacement? How fast does it run from 0-60kph? How are your pistons? Most probably, your answer would come from your car catalogue. What would you have then? Just a car. A simple Corvette.
Now imagine this. You roll up the street with your car (be it a Civic, a Sentra, a Corolla, or whatever), sure, not that much people will notice. But the real car enthusiast will. The sound coming from your engine will give out your 4-2-1 Headers, 2" pipings, and performance mufflers. Open your hood and you'll see performance air filters, cold air intake, a turbo or a supercharger even. Best of all, when people ask you what else is under the hood, you know exactly what you will tell them. Forced Pistons, Catalyctic Converters, etc. Now, you can call your ride, your OWN.
If you still feel that you'd rather buy the Corvette, you're not a real car enthusiast. The real car enthusiast would want to tinker and make his car, the easier to call his car really his own. ^^
But then, there's a big difference with the people I mention here from those rice boys. Those who mearly soup up their exteriors.

Its cheaper than buying a Probe, putting on 13" wheels, ground effects lights and a tiny chain steering wheel and having a rolling glorified ghetto blaster, I guess.
