Both. The tendency to addiction (to alcohol and other things) is increasingly thought to be inherited but the addiction itself is learned.

Below are some references which I consider to be informed and responsible.

It's a disease. Alcoholics are a people who are allergic to alcohol. One drink will lead to another, then another, until the individual is lost in the agony and pain of their illness. There is help through a program called 'Alcoholics Anonymous'. But, in order for the person to quit drinking forever by applying this program to their everyday life - first - they have to be willing. Without willingness, nothing is accomplished. -progress.

Both. It has been proven that alcoholism can be passed on genetically. It has happened in my own family. Others learn in by wanting to be cool and doing what their friends are doing. Some do it to handle stress, etc.

I think it can be learned.

But I also think obsessive behavior can be genetic and alcoholics just happen to find liquor before they find overeating, bible-thumping religion or stalking celebrities.

There is also scientific evidence that as the body processes alcohol, it creates a chemical that actually makes us crave more alcohol. Some of us just aren't strong enough to resist that craving.

I think it something learned. In order to inherit something it has to be in your DNA and for your DNA to change that take time.....lots and lots of time.
And for someone who didn't know there parents and later on find out that their mother or father had alcoholism, is sure coincident.

Since , at least, the sixties, research has shown that alcoholism (addiction) is a genetic predisposition. The latest offers hope that genetic researchers may find a way to 'deprogram' those people.

Alcoholism has been proven to be more genetic then learned. Social drinking is learned.

You learned to drink maybe as a coping mechanism from family member but the tendency to become addicted is genetic.

I personally believe that alcoholism is learned either through family or through friends.
