Currently, kimonos are usually identified as Japanese wear. But I believe, 2000 yrs ago, before Japan, the ancient Chinese were wearing a very similar dress.

Same as the eating and kneeling styles.

Kimonos are Japanese, not Chinese. The kimono was based on the Chinese hanfu, so the two do look somewhat similar.

Kimonos are chinese, borrowed by the japanese, with the design improved upon. Chinese culture is older.

Just try searching on kimono patterns. There are lots of fun places to look at. And I think just trying to make one from looking at it would be difficult. All that beautiful fabric..it is eye candy for the sewer and fabriholic. Good luck and have fun.

In short, they're japanese. but heavily influenced by Han Chinese culture at one point in time. As do architecture and writing system (kanji).

Japanese, now that I think of it, Chinese have their own "traditional" clothes that they wear in the past, but I don't what they are called
