Okay - I got laid off from a management position in the IT division of a large company several months ago. I worked my way up to a management position from a more hands-on technical spot. I do not have a college degree, although I am working on acquiring one. I find that my skills are very rusty for hands-on positions and that nobody is willing to look at me for management without a degree. I live in Southern California and my spouse is getting very frustrated with me being unemployed. Anybody have any suggestions? Or better yet, anybody know anyone who is hiring? LOL Thanks :)

I feel for you. I was in the same situation, except I had a degree, but in philosophy. I was out of work in 2002 when the big down turn hit. I went to law school, but I know that's not helpful. But what I would say is, do the credentialing route. Cisco, Microsoft, and lots lots more have the certification tests. They can be a bit expensive, but I know that employers really look at them. Plus you stick it in your resume, put it on monster and you'll pop up in key word searches when they look for CCNA's or whatever. I really think that with your experience certs will probably take you further than even a degree honestly. Having the certs can also get you back into management I think, not just hands-on again.

FYI, I know they are doing a lot of hiring in Silicon Valley right now. I know that's not close to SoCal. Good luck! It's tough, I know.

It definite is a hard time correct now!! Keep up the opposite process seek for definite. Something is sure to pop up. In the intervening time, be certain you're taking each possibility viable to get a few relaxation. Also, make a little of time to take a well scorching sensual tub. I have an understanding of that there are best 24 hours in an afternoon and you can still best do such a lot, however you would do not forget education for a further profession. I consider online colleges are a massive soreness, however the ones via the mail are not so dangerous. I do not know approximately you, but it surely form of clears my ideas whilst I eliminate the litter across the residence, The litter displays a man or woman's state of brain. Good success to you, want you the high-quality!!!

I agree with several other of the answers about how important getting certs are. I got my job because they were impressed by my MCSD cert and then found they didn't use any of those development tools in daily practice.

I realize how much Job Searching sucks. One thing I suggested to my wife since she is unemployed is using all the tools you have available to you. Most importantly I find are the use of the RSS feeds you can get from the different job search engines, newspapers, and big companies of the new postings.

I use Bloglines but I think Yahoo has a free RSS feeds reader as well. Another good thing you can use is some of the sites that aggregate the results from several search engines into one feed. The best one I've found is Indeed.

Another key is keeping organized. A great free tool for organizing your Job Search is Job Search Log. It tracks your jobs, ads, and allows you to create and send customized letters for jobs you enter into their system.

Best of Luck with your Job Search,

Michael
