if you use yahoo or msn as your email clients, yes you don't need to set an email alert as such. just run messenger.yahoo.com and or messenger.msn.com
minimise these to the system tray and work on whatever you are doing, you can set an audio alert if you want one, but when you get an email you will get a little pop up on the bottom right of the screen. you can then click the pop up to be taken direct to your inbox.
not sure if it works in MCE or vista with the media centre panel running you will still get the audio warning if not the pop up in MCE or vista.
