Can't we all just get alone?

I live in Madison and I am a lesbian. I am not the marrying kind, but I have been in a long term relationship for ten years. I believe most of the controversy surrounding gay and lesbian issues can be looked at in the same vernacular as when the civil rights issues occurred concerning black Americans in the 60's. It is all political and in time, resisting the changes needed, will be looked at as what it is: hatred. All people deserve to be happy, and if we make laws about what is "morally corrupt" by one person's standards, when do we stop? I love Madison and I consider myself an integral part of the community. I have faith Wisconsin will see the truth and uphold their common sense approach to life. What may be an excellent question to the opponents to gay rights is this: If you expect people to be tolerant to you, how can you be so intolerant to others?

I'm in Wisconsin and I don't understand it at all. They're trying to change the state constitution, that's what you're talking about, right? And the referrendum?
I am guessing it'll pass by a fairly wide margin. There are alot of people that support gay rights, but alot more that feel that it's an affront to traditional marriage.
I think that it's kind of embarassing to have our legislature devoting time to putting it in the constitution. I mean, the highest legal document in Wisconsin is going to have a provision on whether or not gay people can file jointly on tax returns. I guess it's more than kind of embarassing to me. I think that the constitution should be better than that. It's an affront to traditional constitutions.

Well it baffles me that people would even take issue with any of this. I'm thinking that if people live together in the most committed relationship you can have? It's going to do probably better than heterosexual marriage! 60% of heterosexual Marriages end in divorce. So who are we to hold up our union as a role model? The real reason to allow something like this is not just for Gay people.... It's to allow single women to adopt kids, or foster kids, or single dads to do the same. It's to allow kids to fin a loving home no matter what the sexual makeup of the couple is. And to allow people in a committed relationship; and Yes please let's just say it again! It's a committed relationship - it may last longer or shorter than the average marriage, it may never dissolve. I doubt the stats are any more heinous when it comes to gay couples rather than hetero couples. In fact I would venture that a home of 2 men or women who loved each other enough to defy all the odds are SO committed that the home life would be way more structured or at least bound to succeed.

I'm working for a campaign called Fair Wisconsin which goal is to defeat the ban on same sex marriage and civil unions. To find out more go here www.fairwisconsin.com

What people don't understand is that this ban will not only effect homosexual couples but also un-married straight couples. They are trying to prevent rights from ANY un-married couple.

Why should we be refused the same rights as everyone else? We pay taxes, work, and buy goods just like everyone else does.

not sure what the exact issue is there in WI, but any vote regarding gay rights is just to get conservatives to the polls who otherwise would not vote.

It's simply a political tactic. Change on actual gay issues are few and far between. The funny thing is, people still fall for it and go to the polls.

Well, I feel BOTH sides of the issue. I live in Milwaukee, and my sister is a lesbian. I however do not morally believe in same sex relationships, but of course I want my only sibling to be happy. Why shouldn't she be allowed tax breaks, discounts on insurance etc. just because she preferes the company of women? Do I believe in same sex marriages? NO, but do I want my sister happy? YES! Will I vote to allow it?? I dont know. My heart is being pulled in two directions....what I believe is morally important or my sisters life.
P.S. She says she was born this way...my mom said she knew that she would grow to be a lesbian from the time my sister was little....could it be genetic make-up..or society?

I hope that it fails. I am so tired of special interest groups and over zealous politicians trying to degrade and demoralize our Constitution. If you truly love someone, the laws of man aren't going to change the union you make. If you want to be gay, I could care less. At least you can't breed.

I can just say this, it says in the bible that man should not sleep with mankind as with womankind, it is an abomination. that goes for women too, either side i am not judging anyone, but the bible i read tells me that its wrong. that would be the Holy Bible King James Version
