First AC traveling facilities are available in very limited and prestigious trains of Indian Railways one such being All Rejudging Express.

At stations, these passengers have special reasonably well maintained rest rooms at major/big stations, with attendant on duty.

On trains, separate cabins are offered on twin sharing basis, with full time smart attendants throughout the journey. In all Radians, all meals, tea/coffee/juices/snacks are provided free of cost (actually their costs are already included in the fare), clean bed rolls are given free of charge for overnight journey and small personal manageable requirements are also taken care of by the attendants.

1st class=AC (that's what 1st class means 'AC')
is the pits...generally all one gets is a 'PUSH BACK' chair......very few have berths and that's what our friend is referring to.....he's referring to a 'Coupe'..I've been in one in 20 years..Yes the 2 person coupe is nice I will agree but when in India I like to be in India. I suspect there's one coupe car on one out of 50 to 100 trains...hen's teeth.
As far is the special restrooms and waiting room in the station as a westerner I always just go into 1st class waiting rooms....nobody is going to challenge. I don't like waiting rooms 1st or 2nd...I just hang around the platform where all the fun is. There is no 3rd class on Indian trains any more..I just unreserved seating...Hard seats...avoid at all costs for a journey longer than 1 hour..very crammed and western butts can't handle hard wood slat seats.

AC is available to anyone that is willing to pay the 4 to 5 times extra cost of 2nd class sleeper. AC class coops one up in a car 'boggie' that is all sealed and the windows are invariable so dirty one sees nothing of the journey. And if one wants to spend the entire journey with boring Indian businessmen then by all means take AC.

If one wants to see the countryside go by and meet wonderful gracious Indians and Indian family's take 2nd class sleeper. Now if one is in India in may-Aug then there might be a good reason to take AC..meer survival.

If not in hot season and a long journey request upper berth (you can climb up into your own little world and do whatever you like, sleep, read, etc).
2nd class is India...it's a real trip on some lines..vendors coming on at every station, crazy co motion, wonderful conversation, and things one can't imagine.
So one wants to be locked out of sight and away from India by all means take AC otherwise go 2nd class sleeper....
Pick up a copy of 'Trains at a Glance' available outside many railway stations..New Delhi station..I can save your life has schedules for ever (practically) train in India.
Use tourist quota if necessary...can get one out of a jam..some trains are booked for days in advance (2-4) anyway.

3 months a year in India since 1986
