DRAMA.
it symbolizes the [dramatic] conflict between the happy-heroic protagonist with his outer motivation [what he wants], and the stereotypically-vile antagonist with his efforts to prevent that motivation from happening.
culminating in a climactic confrontation that resolves the issue.
Theatrical media[movies, books, & such] attempts to portray this.
it's also a Roman mythology called JANUS that deals with a 2 faced doorway character. similar to the 2 faced behavior of many neo-conservative american yuppies. [lol]
Hebrews 4:12 illustrates how God's Word cuts thru all that masked-fronting-fakeness in both the physical and spiritual plane to expose the raw TRUE thoughts and attitudes contained inside a person's heart. ...basically exposing a person's true colors. [ also why 2faced people like to avoid reading it. ]
unfortunately, much of american society tends to condition us from birth to NOT have the moral courage to say what's REALLY on our minds. those masks are sometimes referred to as:
"Janus masks, Greek masks, Shakesperian masks, the Happy Sad masks, Theatre masks, & Comedy Tragedy masks." as exhaustively outlined at this dedicated website: http://www.angelfire.com/art/masks/maskhistory.html
the happy side of that dual mask symbol is also typified by the smiling emoticon below, next to my hulksmaashing web-alias.

No, tonalc1 is correct - Comedy & Tragedy, the two faces of Greek Theatre. Bear in mind in ancient Greece actors (or Hippocrites, as they were called - that's where the term comes from) wore masks on stage, not their real face.

I thought they were just called "drama masks," but maybe "comedy and drama masks."
Here's what wiki says:
"In fact, the two masks associated with drama with the smiling and frowning faces are both symbols of the Muses Thalia and Melpomene. Thalia is the Muse of comedy (the smiling face), and Melpomene is the Muse of tragedy (the frowning face)."
Hope that helps.
