an object will have a shadow if its opaque. if the body does not allow any light falling on it to pass through itself ie. it has totally absorbs or totally reflects the light the a shadow is formed. if the body is polished then it will reflect a major part of the light while if the object is a human body then it will absorb the major part of the light falling on it. if a body has zero absorption & reflection power then no shadow will be formed & light will simply pass through it. although there is no such object discovered or invented till now.

By whatever is casting the shadow (you, a building, a blade of grass) blocking the light of the sun, so whatever is behind it is not directly in the sun and therefore darkened.
