The only correct answer is yes and no. Most IT departments of any size today have some sort of monitoring software which will monitor your online usage and they then have a program which scans that monitored input for certain tell-tale flags. If they find a "flag" then they would more closely monitor your particular computer. If you're lucky you may get a warning the first time, but if you do it often or are flagrant, it would probably men instant dismissal.
There is only one way I know of to bypass that monitoring and that is to set up a VPN connection to your home computer, activate your VPN and do all of your chatting via the VPN connection. When you do that, the actual chat and keystrokes happen on your home computer and not on your work system. However not all work environments permit VPN connections and may have both the VPN ports and Chat ports blocked by the network routers.

Companies may have installed a program that captures a screen shot of activity for a certain time. You might be caught and loose your job. Chat can be re-sched after work.
What would you risk?

Alot of companies have programs on their software where they can monitor any activity that is done on their systems, my advice is to not play on the internet while you are at work, thats not why you are there.

If they have software to track what you are doing at your computer, it wouldn't matter if you were offline or not, cause they know that Yahoo messenger is running.
