It's not optical illusion. it work on a very simple calculation and a lot of diagrams to fool the players. Let me illustrate:
if you chosed numbers from 10 - 19, the subtraction will always yield "9"
if you chosed numbers from 20 - 29, the subtraction will always yield "18", then 27 for the next range and so on.
So, if I put the same symbol in 9, 18, 27, 36 etc, then if your calculation is correct, it always landed on the symbol you selected. Other numbers are irrelevant.
Try it... guess I deserve a 10 point from you on this answer?

This works based on the way the numbers are added and then subtracted; the answer is always going to be a multiple of 9, and so the same symbol is used for 9, 18, 27, 36, etc. Several people have asked about this one.

when you take any number..... say, 22, and subtract the digits added, 4 it gives you 18.
73-10=63
45-9=36
87-15=72
99-18=81
it always equals a multiple of nine.
all of the multiples of 9 on that chart have the same symbol.
