The assassination of the Arch Duke Ferdinand by Gavrilo Princep. When this occurred, the Triple alliance of Europe Was activated in retaliation and World War I started. WWI precipitated the signing of the Treaty of Versailles, which bankrupted and impoverished Germany, giving rise to the Nazi party and directly leading up to WWII. Amazing what the bullet of an angry young man can do.

The first world war 1914-1918 changed the course of history and set the tone for all that followed. It was in effect an open door to a century of warfare and technological advancement that has not stopped as of this writing. Fortunately for us at least the technology has become more about consumers and less about war machines. Not to say that development of more powerful weapons has stopped, it certainly has not but at least the good things are being invented. History is an on going story.

The development of the PC and the dawning of the age of the Internet!!!! The world will never be the same again. People's lifestyles revolved around it, the whole business sector and economies depends so much on it, livelihood and travel cannot be with out it. The whole airline industry will be in a mess if there's no computer to help them out . Even the development of the cell phones is so dependent on computers.

Hmm..The First World War, more so then the second..it was the first ever industrial war and men were just massacred..the second world war cost more lives but it was fluid, armies moved over the continet..the European allies rarely moved yards, if inches, in the first great war..
That, and the internet :) Invented by an Englishman working for CERN. Booyah

I'd have to say the invention of the talking picture. World War II depended on propoganda and newsreels, computer monitors are based on the technology, they enabled the invention of TVs...

Besides my birth?
Okay, seriously. There is so much, really, but I think the defeat of Nazi Germany was a big one. All of Europe was going down the tubes. If they had gotten to the atomic bomb first we'd all be eating sauerkraut right now.
