for someone to display a United States flag and a Confederate flag next to each other?

They lost the war, but the values are still there. According to what friends I have in the South, they claim it was about State's Rights vs. Federal Intervention.

Seems that for them it is a good symbol that although the fight is no longer by war, they still hold on to those values.

California just faced the same problem with their medical weed laws vs. Federal laws. They seem to have agreed with the Confederate values that State Rights come first.

no. they're celibrating their roots with the confederate flag, and their patriotism with the u.s. flag... it's the same as someone flying the u.s. flag next to the kenyan, irish, mexican, french, etc. flag

It is quite consistent with the general inconsistency and lunacy of USA.
