During the VietNam war, monks were setting themselves on fire and there is another name for it besides self-immolation.

A form of suicide that follows your beliefs as a form of sacrifice, but stupidity comes to mind too.

I checked the thesaurus and there were no matches to /Self-immolation

What it was called by another name is hardly important. Whats important is the love and courage it would take a human to do that. Do you know why they did it. To protest the killing of the children of their land from all the soldiers ares as much if not more . I was blessed by meeting a very wonderful talented man who happened to see the monk (I have only heard of one really who did this) who poured gas on himself and lit it in front of the two cameras. He said he nevered moved. Do you know what kind of mental state that would take. No one could do that in America I would make book on. I might be motivated to pour gas on myself, but whether I could light It I couldnt really say. but i bet I would be screaming pretty quick afterwards. that man and I so wish I knew his name he needs to have a name , did not cry out and he did not move. And I have always thought of him as the real hero of the vietnam war.

The practice of sati (or suttee[1]) is a South Asian funeral custom, now very rare, in which the dead man's widow immolates herself on her husband’s funeral pyre.

I cant find anything that refers to this activity as anything other than self-immolation. It is a spiritual ritual and in the US I believe it is used as a form of protest.
