I like listening to rap, just because you dislike a genre of music doesn't mean you should totally bash it.

Not all rap is bad although I haven't heard anything that's good for a few years now from the hip hop genre. It's been in decline for a good long time--an ever narrowing lyrical formula of materialism, misogyny, and murder over recycled beats put out by the same three producers. Careers don't last--anybody remember No Limit?--so the guy who was on top of the hip hop world three years ago might as well have never existed. I never really cared for Eminem, but listen to his records from five or six years ago and he's lyrically and musically head and shoulders above most of his colleagues.
The ghetto scum and their suburban wigger wannabe counterparts who buy this stuff just don't know any better. Toss out a name like Public Enemy or Boogie Down Productions or De La Soul to them and you'll get a blank stare. They think are being really rebellious when they slap down allowance money from Dad when 50 Cent "drops" a new CD, but in reality a bunch of 50+ white men in suits who voted for Bush are profiting handsomely from hip hop product.

I will state this plain and simple. Rap and Hip Hop suck. This "genre" of music requires no talent at all - talk about bling, cars, sex, drugs and that person will sell a million records, which is totally unreasonable. Lyrics these days are so recycled. There is MORE to talk about than old boyfriends and girlfriends, sex you've had or bling and cars. People who defend hip hop talk about how they can "dance to it". You can dance to creative electronic music that can produce some of the most enchanting melodies you will ever hear. People/musicians don't know how to press the boundaries of music anymore, except for a select few people such as Shiina Ringo, Bjork, Fiona Apple and Radiohead. Music is meant to be from the heart, displaying it with emotion and abstract ideas. Rap and hip hop show no creativity at all - rappers dress in the same clothes, talk about the same things, use the same generic "beat"/"clap" in the background of every song which annoys me to no end. If you wanted to, all you need is money, connections and a computer to become the next genericized hit. Elvis and John Lennon would be appalled at the music scene today.

No I don't think it sucks. Just like every music genre there are songs that suck, but as a whole it's fine. Lately a lot of American hiphop/rap is full of commercialism and some have lost the real art of storytelling. Some are all about getting airplay/clubplay and simply the all mighty dollar.
I don't think it's going anywhere anytime soon.

I don't like some of the lyrics, themes, violence, objectifying of women, drug use, drinking, and bad videos associated with rap/hip hop but sometimes the songs are good and catchy and fun to dance to or are deep songs that come from the heart rather then out of no where or down there.

hip hop and rap sucks!!!!! punk rock is the way to go. rap is seriously crap. i mean who wants to know about what he did last night in bed? not i! atleast punk rock has actually feelings. And most punk rock doesn't talk about strippers. So yea, I agree: Rap/Hip Hop sucks. And I agree if you put a bumper sticker on your cap like 50cent Sucks ect. you probably will get shot. Everything on the radio today only talks about getting into girls pants. It is really disgusting. Hip hop used to be good, but its just getting dirtier and dirtier.

What is the difference between rap and hip hop? I thought they were the same thing.
Anyway, I think you are about ten years too late. Hopefully it will die out, but as long as people keep buying this CRAP, record companies will keep pumping it out.

Post 90's absolutely. '83 to '87 was the Golden Age. But if it sells, I got no problem with making millionaires out of minorities.
