Best advice I can give is buy another trash can. Raccoons are smart. Just when you think you've tricked them ya find out you were wrong. They can be some mean little burgers too. Try the trash cans that lock the lid in place with the handles. I'm tellin ya though they are smarter than what ya think. If ya have the big trash cans that ya roll to the street put mothballs around it.

Try spraying the outside of the can with some WD-40. I've heard it is a squirrel deterrent, and I can't imagine a raccoon would find it any more pleasant.

You have to put very heavy things on top of the garbage cans, like big rocks. There may also be some of that cording with hooks at the end that you can use to attach the top of the can to the bottom. I know that there are garbage cans specifically made to keep critters out. Good luck!

Put bolders, or something heavy on top of them, put mothballs around them, spray bug repelant on it, put it in a place where the raccoons can't get into it...

Dangit, Federico took my answer lol, I was gonna say a pellet gun. but other than that, theres really not much you can do. Racoons will get into anything.

P.S. A dog would work too!!! :)
