Lightning travels at 186,000 miles per second so you will see that instantaneously. Thunder travels at about 1,200 feet per second (depending on air temperature) so there will be a delay between when you see the lightning and hear the thunder. To calculate how far away the lightning is starting counting as soon as you see the lightning. Count>one onethousand, two onethousand, threeonethousand and so on...... For every 5 seconds that you are able to count before hearing the thunder, the lightning is 1 mile away.
