Our backyard fence is in desrepair. We have never met our backyard neighbor before (we just moved here). We want to rebuild the fence between our yard. Should they pay for a part of it?

It depends on whose property the fence is.
If it is on your land, the cost is all yours. If it's on their land, it's their baby. In that case, you build your own beautiful fence, when you can afford it, but you could not ask your neighbour to participate.
A friendly way to discuss the matter is to invite them for a good cup of coffee when you see them in their backyard or discuss it over the fence -literally speaking-; the formal way is to pay them a visit to introduce yourself and discuss about the matter.
I hope that your neighbours will be willing to participate orelse they might prove a big pain! (bad personal experience!)

You can ask, and point out that it will increase home value. But they are under no obligation to pay for any part of it.

You could start by saying that you want to replace the fence with a small, cheap ugly one, but that if they helped out, you could put up a nicer one.

I would also not try to get a whole 50% out of them. If they offer, great, but be prepared to be happy with an offer of less than 50%. Better than nothing.

You say, "Hey neighbor, why don't you split the cost of a backyard fence with me?"

Invite them over for dinner. Start discussing the fence. Tell them you are considering putting up a new one that would enhance your house as well as theirs and ask would they be interested in splitting the cost.

Nope. If you put a fence up, or repair one that exists, that is all on you! AND, you have to show the good side of the fence facing thier yard! We put up a stockade fence and had to show the best side to thier yard. Way it goes...

First of all, determine whose property it's on. If it's exactly on the property line, you might open the conversation about replacing it with them. Say neighbor, we can't figure out whose fence this is, but we'd like to replace it. Would you be willing to chip in?

It depends. First, whose side of the property is the fence on. Urs or theirs? If its on theirs, they may not even want it repaired, or say heck with it and take it down. If urs, your on ur own. U may be able to ask them for a lil donation, but its ur fence then.

Butter them up first. Then talk about how nice it would be to fix that fence. Then ya could be like, " I wonder if it's on my side or your side, (If they have been there longer they willl know). If it's their fence they would probaly go in halves, (but ya have to convice them it needs to be fixed). If it is your fence ya better do some sweet talkin.

Just go up and talk to them next time you catch them outside. I live in a new neighbor and that's what we did. I beats paying for it yourself.
