It doesn't
As a human being u have needs and and u have limitations to your abilities. God, however, does not.
According to the way u percieve your needs u might classify things that happen to u as 'beneficial' or 'harmful'
God has no needs, thus nothing to his holy self is 'beneficial' or 'harmful'.
You can't 'serve' God by the old human definition of the word.
As a human being you can't even comprehend the nature of God's will or intellect.
Worshipping God then remains a matter of faith in something that is way beyond your human understanding yet something u can feel in the stream of every moment and see in every place.
Servitude is a one-sided concept. You serve God by believing in his holy self, passing his word, and doing all that's in your power to make the world a better place; but the word 'serve' itself does not now carry the same typical meaning that is.

The reason people say you are serving god (in my perspective) is because you're carrying on a word he was trying to pass before he was crusified. By believing in him, you serve his purpose. He had faith in a higher power just like me and my family. I know that sometimes this could be a shaded area for many (because of different religions and beliefs), but you really have to find your own purpose in serving god. So this isn't an answer that just anybody can answer, but yourself. If you haven't found god in your life yet then this question can't be answered, but I can see where you are coming from. I hope I answered your question some what.

It doesn't. Sorry if that offends. But belief does not serve. Satan believes in God, but doesn't serve Him. Believing in God is one thing, serving Him is another.

It is the first commandment. God is God, and that alone commands out belief, thus that belief itself is serving to God.

Mark 10:45
For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

Luke 4:8
Jesus answered, "It is written: 'Worship the Lord your God and serve him only.'"

When you believe in God, you glorify Him in everything you do. That is one way to serve Him. Just by having faith in Him is also a way of serving Him. After that everything you do is to serve Him, therefore if you believe then you serve God.

Only if you believe in God , and your faith in him causes you to live for him and you are willing to obey his commandment's, and sacrifice your own will to his.He died on a cross for the payment of sins ,only for those who will confess their sins and ask him to come into your life and live through you. There is no other name given under Heaven by which man must be saved but the name Christ Jesus. If you want to ponder an awesome thought , why is it 2006, no one ever has set time in his own hands but God alone!

true belief reflects itself in the way the believer acts/feels/etc...acting as a role model in God's image and having true peace/joy with Him in your life inevitably leads to displaying a life that others would want for themselves, thus bringing people closer to bringing God into their own lives!

In a simpler way of puttiing it....our belief is His free advertising for more 'clients'/followers!

This question always bothered me.
If God exist and is omnipotent, why would he CARE if some insignificant bugs called humans believe in him or not?

It's impossible to be pleased to God without believing in Him. And you must believe that He is a rewarder of them who diligentely call Him.
