There was a turtle walking down my street, and so we stopped and picked it up.... it was a red eared slider..... not native in my state. sooo, we put in my bath tub, and gave it some food, under the orders of my friend's mom (she is an awesome vet) thanks Dr. Maker....

it is a water turtle that you would buy in a pet shop. I live in a desert..... We think it escaped someone's pond

Non-native turtles can be a nuisance. In this case, if there is a city lake or pond nearby, it may have a colony of these- these popular pets ahve been released all around the US and have established breeding colonies in many places.
I'd put up signs at the local pet shop, animal shelter, and in the neighborhood asking if anyone lost it. If no one responds after about a week, I'd put up signs in the pet shop offering it free to a good home.
If you want to make it a pet, you can get good info here:

I live in Oklahoma and red eared sliders are everywhere! Yeah they do need water and no desert is not even close to their natural habitat. Simply look on the internet for some great information on them. they're easy to care for, but yes like someone said you may want to contact the wildlife department and let them find somewhere good for it to be.

If it's one not native to your state then someone put it out, OR it is migrating in to your state. You should notify the fish and wildlife department of your state! They may ask you for the turtle so be prepared to turn it over to them (they will take good care of it).

I would add it to the 3 sliders I already have, one I have had for 27 years.

I would have done the same thing as you did. Give yourself a pat on the back for removing what was probably someones pet from your local ecosystem where it didn't belong as well.

i would put an add in teh paper about a found turtle believed to be someone pet and let the ppl call and describe it to you. if no one answers i would keep it, if its that hot out there i would fear for its safety and keep it.

That is not uncommon where I live. I see turtles all the time so I just leave them alone.
