I know Katrina happened a year ago but this question plagues me everyday. The media also played a huge role in calling US citizens "refugees". Did they not understand the meaning of refugees or only called the US citizens this because of the color of their skin? Let me hear those answers!

First off! There were victims of Katrina's wrath who were of every color! My guess is that they where called refugees because they no longer had a city to live in. Most of southern Louisiana was washes away and their citizens had to flee to other parts of the country to start a whole new life. That is why I believe katrina victoms were labled "Refugees"

The meaning of refugees it someone who has to seek refuge somewhere other than their homes because some disaster has made staying at home untenable.

Legal Encyclopedia
Refugees

Individuals who leave their native country for social, political, or religious reasons, or who are forced to leave, as a result of any type of disaster, including war, political upheaval, and famine.

Often refugees are unwilling to return to their country of citizenship because they fear political, social, or cultural persecution. The refugees turn to other countries for protection and support. A related problem is statelessness, which occurs when ones country of citizenship has been absorbed by another nation through war or political change. The United States has promulgated policies to aid refugees and stateless persons both internationally, through various international organizations and treaties, and domestically, through national immigration policies.

A refugee is someone seeking refuge. It is not related to nationality, race, gender or income. It is related to a large and damaging event, natural or otherwise, which has made refuge both necessary and difficult to obtain. They were also called hurricane victims, flood victims or disaster victims. I believe victim is to hard a word where nature is the cause. "Victim" implies intent to harm or willful disregard. Nature didn't decide to cause harm, the people were just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I stay in a supburb of latest Orleans said as Metairie. If the levee had damaged on the different fringe of the canal, i'd were flooded completly. I were given fortunate. formally, this is the duty of the persons to get out of how of a typhoon. Is it the duty of the authorities to get automobiles out of how of the rushing trains? the authorities can and could in straight forward words do what it may to guard its human beings. Now that being stated, it became the Corps of Engineers who were thoroughly to blame for St. Bernard flooding. The MRGO became, is, and regularly is the only reason for that parish being destroyed. that is a very unneeded waterway the corp equipped and is now going to be closed on the taxpayer's price. As for the destruction of latest Orleans, no it became no longer each of the typhoon's fault. It became back the Corps of Engineers, New Orleans Levee Board, and the present and previous mayors of latest Orleans. The corps built levees alongside canals, yet used lesser components to do the interest and did not stick to the options of the 0.33 social gathering engineers. The Levee Board became a politically appointed interest that no individual listened to. they could locate complications contained in the levees and record them to the corps, yet neither might want to fix the subjects with out the mayors spending the money to attain this or paying for the money from the feds to fix the subjects. It became a fiasco. And as for why New Orleans became so impoverished, I actually have pronounced that earlier. It became the White Flight that began below the Moon Landrieu administration and the criminal activities of the administrations in view that. isn't Marc Morial being investigated now in Washington D. C.?

These poor people were taken away from their homes because of the flooding there. They lived in Tempory homes till they could move back or find another place to live. Some will never go back and others still live in other places till they can move back. We had some that moved here in El Paso and will stay. I know it is hard for them as they had to start over after they lost every thing.

they were often referred to as refugees because they had to leave their homes due to a disaster and in many cases had to rely on civic agencies and the government for help. It had nothing to do with skin color.
