My daughter is 8 months old, and since birth, she does crosses her legs, starts grunting, and breaks into a sweat. Most of the time, she can be distracted out of this by showing her a toy or giving her a pacifier ... which is why I don't think it's a seizure.

It cannot be colic as she's too old, and I took her to a GI specialist who has eliminated the possibility of it being a GI problem. He felt she might be doing it to get attention/picked up; so he told us to ignore her when she does this for a couple weeks. This didn't help at all; she still does it.

My next step is to take her to a neurospecialist for further tests, but I was wondering if anyone else has seen this same issue. Her development is wonderful, she's very aware/alert and know everything that goes on. She's always smiling/laughing/playing/talking; but she does have this one issue that isn't going away.

Thanks.

One more thing ... I don't think it's gas because she is not at all constipated, and we've even given her Mylecon drops. There is also no direct link to anything -- she can start doing it in her sleep, while she's playing, during eating, or while she's alone. I cannot link it to anything.

Have you watched House? :-D This was actually on an episode last season!

Umm...if you didn't already know, this may sound stupid, but young children masturbate...only not using their hands. This freaks out lots of parents and they think that their babies are having seizures or the like. I'm not picking...I'm dead serious!!! The rocking back and forth and crossing her legs very tightly is probably pleasurable to her and that could be what's going on...If you still feel uneasy about it, then take her to a doctor!

I'm sure she's okay...best of luck in figuring this out.

I have a five and a half month old baby. I am not sure if he is doing the same thing you are saying your baby is doing.

he lifts his legs up in the air, crosses them, slams them back down and he grunts off and on and is sweaty from doing this.
He does this sleeping or awake time, doesn't really matter he does it all the time.

I think he is doing it cause he can lift his legs, and it seems to be a type of excercise for him and that is why he gets sweaty.
He has no problems with gas and sometimes when he lifts his legs he farts. However there are times when he does this that he is making noises and giggling.
The older they get they learn something new they can do, crawl, sit up, scoot, and so on. I think the crossing of her legs and grunting is no different.
You don't need to pick her up every time she does this, Sounds like your baby is just intertaining herself and learning movements with her legs...Kind of like peek a boo with her legs instead of another person.
I wouldn't waste the money on a neurospecialist when most babies go threw this in some way or another.
Just relax and watch her, it can be quit intertaining for you to watch as well and see her responses to what she is doing on her own..You can even get on the ground with her and lift her legs and lay them down, you may get a giggle out of her for just playing with her.
good luck and enjoy these moments. I know I sure am.

I'm afraid it really does sound like a mild seizure. But almost all seizures are the result of some part of the brain being malnourished. So with her doing it since birth...makes that almost impossible. Keep the video camera ready and video tape it. Then show it to her doctor. It might ring a bell in the doctor's head if they actually see it for them self. Hope this helps. Best of Luck.

If all she is doing is crossing her legs, grunting and sweating, I would see if she outgrows it. It may be disturbing to you, but children have quirks, even at a young age. Although you have been to a GI, it honestly sounds like gas. My daughter did something similar at a young age, and stopped on her own. Turns out she was indeed trying to move her bowels.
It does not have the hallmarks of a seizure, so I wouldn't worry.

I can't believe someone(killerdogs) would answer such a serious and well thought out question with such a rude and nasty response.
Unfortunately I have had this person answer some of my questions in the same manner. She sounds like an angry little girl, all of her answers are in capital letters.(very rude)Please report this person,if we don't we are going to keep getting these same type of answers, and I don't think that is what this site is for.

Now to your question,my daughter did something similar minus the sweating,we never did figure it out,but she grew out of it.
I know this wasn't much help, but try not to worry, children do things we will NEVER figure out.

Good Luck
Have A Great Day!

I agree with those who suggested masturbation. Our daughter (now 11) has done so since 9 or 10 months old. It is not the same feeling as for an adult but some children do find comfort in that sort of stimulation. Check out this site for more info.

I feel it's best to have her evaluated. The symptoms she is experiencing don't exactly sound normal, however, they might not be serious either. However, it would be a relief to find out what this behavior might be..and how you can help her.
One thing to consider, if you do find out what is wrong..and if it's chronic, or serious. Is that we all have things about us that make us different. Some of them are hard to deal with..but we cope and life happy lives.
It sounds like your child has a great caring mom-and that she will be happy no matter what.
Take care, and my best to you both.

I would seriously take her to another pediatrician. Or, a Dr. who specializes in seizure disorders.
I could be wrong, but what you describe sounds a whole lot like seizures to me. There are many different seizures. You really need to have her checked out. If she does this in her sleep, then it is obviously not a choice she is making.
Get her to another Physician.

I agree with Jennifer. My girl does it even to this day when she's abt to poop and when she has to release gas! Gas can happen to kids of any age! There are so many veggies which cud give ur baby gas. So try to watch her diet.
If ur doc says its ok there's no need worry! But if u r still not relieved its better to get her checked just be rest assured!
Gud luck :)

I've read several answers saying she may have to poop. While this may be it may be she has to urinate and doesn't quite want to. She may have a slight urinary tract infection and it hurts a little. Holding in urine can cause even adults to sweat. Have her doctor check for infection.
I doubt it will turn out to be serious.

Fortunately she seems to have no symptoms of RLMIS (Rude, loudmouth Idiot Syndrome) as exhibited by K.D.

Good Luck and God Bless!
