Most burning software will convert it automatically. At least I know mine does. I use Ulead DVD Movie Factory. It's a great all in one package. Menus, chapters, multiple files, and as you requested, conversion, are all handled with ease.

a little known trick in windows XP is to simply change the files extension from avi to mpeg or mpg.
so if a file was named "movie.avi" just hit the rename making sure that in your system view options that file extensions are not hidden. right click the file scroll to rename then retype the file extension you require. works if your burner is nero at least.

I hope that helps.

If you have software just open the .avi and go to file>save as and select mpeg to file type. If that doesnt work try file>export.
