Heres the thing. I always thought this was cheesy, but it really works. If you had a billion dollers, what would you do all day, or with your free time. would you golf? would yoou grow things? What would you do. Now really think about it.
OK now what ever you said you wanted to do, that is what you should pursue, because that is what makes you happy. I sya if you have the money to make the maney doing what you want, then do it.

You probably fall in the same group as about 90% of the rest of the population concerning what to persue as a career, whether or not people would admit it.
I have been working for about 35 years. From my own experiences and experiences I've gathered from others simple things that may be able to help you with some simple guidelines.
1. Don't assume that the best job for you as an individual is the best paying job. I have met many people that make very good money and can't stand the job or themselves. In fact, they often quit their high paying job and find something they enjoy doing.
2. If you find a career that you are passionate about, chances are better that you will exceed and work toward the higher end of the payscale in your chosen career vs. someone who went after a very lucrative career ($), who didn't have the passion, and continued on the low end of the pay scale for that field of work.
3. Don't be afraid to sample different fields of work. You don't know which foods you like until you taste them. Check out the banquet of careers and try some of the cuisine that looks good to you.
4. Continue your education. Gathering data or knowledge is a smart thing to do, but remember, turning data or knowledge into action and results is the intelligent thing to do. I have seen people do amazing things with less knowledge than many, but they used more of the knowledge they did have to their advantage. You must make knowledge work for you.
5. If you are already passionate about something, think about your passion in terms of a career. If you study business and administration you can make it work for you in building a business, your own or an employers', that is aligned to your passions. My daughter wants dearly to be a runway and commercial model. She also wants to get a degree in business administration. Modeling is her passion, the education can help her to make it a passionate and lucrative business career for herself in modeling. Education can give you the tools to turn you passion into a more effective career making you not only richer in happiness, but maybe a little richer in dollars as well.
6. Fear is defeat. The only thing to fear is that you wake up one morning agonizing because you didn't accomplish anything, because you didn't try, because you were afraid to. Now that is scary...I've been there. So try and fail until you find something that you just can't give up on because you are passionate about what you are doing.

It's always difficult to figure out what to do. I went through several career changes and now I think I've found something that I love.
I initially went to a career counselor but was skeptical at first. If you haven't tried it, I would recommend it. If for nothing at all, it will help you discover more about yourself which, in turn, could help lead you into a career that will fit your personality and wants in a job. That's what it did for me.
Then, my career counselor told me to set up some informational interviews or to check out this site:
http://www.jobpodge.com
It's a site of real life job experiences written from people's first hand view of their own job. Hope this helps and good luck with your search!

You poor thing. Do you not have a life's dream on the profession that you want? Why not just take a break, it sure sounds like you are burnt out just thinking about this problem.
Why not take a job with little stress for a year or two? A lot of people go through what you are now. Just take it easy. You have many years to go. If you stress yourself out now, you won't be in any shape to have any profession. Good luck on whatever you do.

my partner swears by the book---- what color is your parachute--- it is very popular with new editions all the time.
i am in the same boat. except i got a masters in womens studies and now i have too much education to get a low level job and not enough work experience to get a higher level position.
i made a list of the qualities i would like in a job- for examle, helping people, benefits, daylight hours... etc. and i am looking for a job that meets those qualities. currently teaching english compostion and i am happy enough that i dont have to jump at the first job offer i get.

If you are just starting out, find your passion. A failure is just a stepping stone to another opportunity. If you don't know your passion, at least figure out what you enjoy and go for it. It may not work out, but the bridges you build along the way may also lead you somewhere you never expected.
