I saw eight or nine of these huge birds circling in and out of each other relatively close to the ground. I thought they were hawks, but I'd never heard of hawks grouping like that. My brother says they were probably turkey buzzards, which look like hawks from a distance, and have the large wingspans. They also circle around animals, sometimes in groups like that, since they are vultures. That sounds most likely. I didn't see the red heads they have, but I might have been just a bit too far too notice. Would hawks ever behave like that? Probably the buzzards, eh? It was pretty cool to see, anyway. :)

Wow... your interested in birds or Hawks.. No Hawks do not do this. It was turkey vultures that you seen. They are always in groups and are rarely alone. Now Hawks on the other hunt alone. But I have seen on occasion two together watching for prey. Now I live by a family of hawks who fly in the same area but I have not seen them hunt in groups like that.

I love Hawks..

Typically they would be turkey buzzards around here (Washington State).

The "red headed" turkey buzzards have such dark red heads that you sometimes dont notice.

Anyhow, if you saw something dead beneath where they were circling then they were most likely buzzards or vultures.

Bet it was cool. I have never seen a hawk nor a turkey buzzard do that but things happen. It is so great just to see things like that happening.

because of their tremendous bodies, birds like those can carry little or no more advantageous weight. they prefer to scavenge and devour what they discover the position they're, as adverse to hawks and eagles which will carry off the prey they only killed to a secure position. they can and absolutely will carry off a small canines or cat. that's way less of a difficulty in the east than in the west.
