Unless you want to go the hypnosis route, which some people swear by, you do have a couple options other than sheer willpower. One is to apply the very disgusting (and therefore, highly successful) nail biting cream like Control It!), which you paint onto your nails. It tastes so bitter you won’t dare bite them. A new product on the market which doesn't taste any better, but is definitely worth trying is Jessica 'Nibble No More,' a no-nail-biting polish with bitter cactus extract as its secret ingredient ($5 at jessicacosmetics.com).

Another option is to keep your nails painted

I bit my nails for 20 years. Now I am 28 and have been bite free for 7. It was hard but I just kept chewing gum. When I got the urge to bite I stuck another gum in there. Hope this helps. If not they have a nail product for nail bitters at a local pharmacy like CVS, WALGREENS, and RITE AID. It tasted worse than Chili. It really worked on my nephew.

Clip your nails. Quit in steps. Or find another stress-reducing habit, like chewing ice! I love ice, it's refreshing and calorie free. I've been chewing it for years and my dentist says there's no sign of wear and that my teeth are perfectly healthy. But everyone's teeth are different.

Think about the colonies of germs living on your hands and underneath your nails --perhaps that will halt your nibbling.

I have heard of hot sauce and that icky stuff they actually sale over the counter that tastes nasty. Here is another alternative.....crazy as it sounds....Vanilla Extract. It may taste good in cookies and cakes but it is NASTY all alone. I have friend that uses a taste of this as an opt. for washing her son's mouth out with soap (like our parents did) when he curses. It tastes like crap but won't leave you looking like a "got milk" commercial like the hot sauce. Hope this helps.

Put a rubber band on your wrist and pull it everytime you catch yourself..

Also tell friends and family you're trying to quit and they'll yell at you.. I do it to my boyfriend all the time..

It seems to be working.

Good Luck!
